Already got the £2.99 Aldi set. Seemed a bargain, but it's only increased the expense by £1.20 a minute. They've got a good deal on an extension-pen attachment too, but that'd only bump me up by another £4.82 a minute.

I actually am making some chess pieces at the moment, out of modelling clay. I suppose that I could try and 'finish' them (i.e. fuck them up beyond all recognition) with the small tungsten carbide milling bit...

Hmm, the possibilities...

I had to google Dremel but I know what a mandrel is. A mandrel is a bit of metal that sometimes looks like a dildo. (And a dildo can be used for fucking - argh, it's contagious, we'll all be saying fuck soon.)

I inherited mine so I don't have to worry about earning the initial investment back, fortunately. Feels like I've probably spent close to about the same as you on cutting disks alone though, the rate I seem to get through them. Can't remember what I last used it for but it's cut through quite a few steel pc cases to fit windows/extra fan vents in it's lifetime. I'm sure I've used it for more than that but can't for the life of me think what now. Maybe something involving grinding?

Btw, Aldi are currently selling a 'combitool' accessory kit, containing slightly less than a metric fuck-ton of dremel-alike bits and pieces for £2.99 Even if not great quality I figured it was worth a punt at that price, as:
a) The cutting disks alone would cost more
b) I think all the mandrels (the bits that hold the cutting disks) I have are either jammed or have lost (i.e. flung off at high speed) their little screw , so could do with a replacement.
c) I fancied trying the polishing bits on some bits of jewellery I've been making.
So, guess with all that I figure I might fall under the 'mad hobbyist' category, though I don't really class myself as one as it's only an occasional thing. It's not like the loft's filled with a scale model of Swindon or that I have a lathe in the shed and bits of carved wood all over the place. I'm definitely at the lazy slacker end of the hobbyist spectrum.

Dremmel related question; what do you actually DO with your Dremmel, Giger?

I bought one because, you know, they're nice and everthing, lots of very useful looking attachements etc, but in three years all I've managed to do with it is grind a slither of a door jam to make the holding-it-closed bit work properly. Oh, and I cut a groove into the shaft of a screw where the head tore off so that I could screw it out.

That's currently working out at around £50 a minute. To make my investment pay I'm going to have to become a mad hobbyist :(
